This thesis is concerned with the methodology adopted for evaluating the impact of on-farm personal computers in the farm management decision making process. The factors which determine the adoption of computerized information systems and the value derived from its use in farm management, particularly when assessing the financial consequences of various decisions, is described in detail in this study. It is argued that when farm decision makers take decisons concerned with adopting information technology devices, such as personal computers, they are normally faced with decisions involving high level of uncertainty. A survey of computarized and non-computerized farm businesses was carried ou in Berkshire with the aim to discover which factors are most likely toinfluence computerized systems adoption, farmers attitudes towards computerization, as well as the likely returns on computerized systems investiment. It is suggested that farmers and/or farm decision makers may have over-optimistic expectations of on-farm personal computers in increasing farm profitability and that these expectations are formulated within a limited information base on the effectiveness of these systems in the farm office. The central argument of this study, therefore, is that evaluating personal computers in farm management decision making is not only concerned with quantifying their financial impact in increasing farm profitability, but is also concerned with improving management effectiveness, business efficiency and the ...
